Kakamega Forest
Basic information
Sample name: Kakamega Forest

Reference: C. F. Mann. 1985. An avifaunal study in Kakamega Forest, Kenya, with particular reference to species diversity, weight and moult. Ostrich 56(4):236-62 [ER 2759]
Geography
Country: Kenya

Coordinate: 0° 13' N, 35° 57' E
Latlng basis: stated in text

Geography comments: three contiguous sites and one nearby site "on the eastern edge of Kakamega Forest"

Environment
Habitat: tropical/subtropical dry broadleaf forest

Substrate: ground surface

WMT: 25.0

CMT: 14.5

MAP: 2000.0

Habitat comments: "The area was chosen because access was difficult and human disturbance minimal... The first three sites were in dense secondary growth with very few tall trees close by. Site D was in undisturbed primary forest entirely under dense canopy"
rainfall is highly seasonal based on Fig. 1
climate data are for Kakamega Forest and are from Fashing et al. (2004)
see samples 184 and 185

Methods
Life forms: birds

Sampling methods: no design, mist nets

Sample size: 964 individuals

Years: 1973 - 1975

Days: 24

Net or trap nights: 280

Basal area status: not applicable

Sampling comments: the study was "from January 1973 to January 1975... Approximately 140m of mist netting was erected in the study area for one 24-h period (12h00 to 12h00) each month on one of the four sites, except in January 1973 (when twice the normal amount of netting was used to sample two sites simultaneously), in December 1973 (when two sites were sampled on consecutive days) and in March, April and August 1974 when no sampling was done"
there were 25 events minus three events plus two events = 24 days of sampling
counts are of birds ringed, excluding recaptures
140 m is equal to 11.67 standard 12 m nets, so there were 280 12 m net-equivalent days of sampling
