Ein Gev I
Basic information
Sample name: Ein Gev I
Reference: S. Davis. 1974. Animal remains from the Kebaran Site of Ein Gev I, Jordan Valley, Israel. Paléorient 2(2):453-462 [ER 3985]
Geography
Country: Israel
Coordinate: 33° 37' N, 36° 38' E
Latlng basis: stated in text
Time interval: Late Pleistocene
Ma: 0.0157
Age basis: radiocarbon (uncalibrated)
Geography comments: "1 km east of the Sea of Galilee at an altitude of 150 m below sea level, or 50 m above the present day level of the lake"
"the lithic assemblage... is Kebaran... One 14 C date on charred bone of 15, 700 BP ± 415 exists"
"the lithic assemblage... is Kebaran... One 14 C date on charred bone of 15, 700 BP ± 415 exists"
Environment
Lithology: sandstone
Taphonomic context: human accumulation, midden, settlement
Archaeology: bone tools, buildings, stone tools
Habitat comments: "a hut 5-7 m. in diameter, surrounded by an area of 50 m2 of dense artifact concentration, with a peripheral area of minor density, extending the site to a total of 150 m2"
there are "six successive layers... Each layer consists of a floor, 5-7 m. in diameter, littered with artefacts and bones, covered by a sandy layer (20-25 cm thick) which contained artifactual material" (Arensburg and Bar Yosef 1973)
artifacts including microlithics (mostly blades and flakes) plus "some picks, five complete and broken basalt pestles and a broken basalt mortar... Four bone made burnishers and one bone awl" (Arensburg and Bar Yosef 1973)
this is a human accumulation and part representation suggests "destruction by prehistoric man of bones rich in marrow"
