Sampling comments: "Within the three skiing areas, study plots were selected by stratified random sampling. As a first step, we divided the area into eight equally large altitudinal zones, ranging from 1,555 to 1,921 m a.s.l. with each zone covering 46 m in altitude. Subsequently, we randomly allocated 41 blocks in these predefined altitudinal strata. Each block included one study plot of 8 9 8 m located on a ski run and one control plot of the same size located outside the skiing slope in the adjacent grassland... Field work was carried out in August 2008... Within each study and control plot, we surveyed the Orthoptera for 12 min, at each of the four sides of the plots"
