Taxonomy, taphonomy and chronology of the Pleistocene faunal assemblage at Ngalau Gupin cave, Sumatra. Quaternary International 603:40-63 [ER 3851]
Geography
Country: Indonesia

State: West Sumatra

Coordinate: -0.64475° S, 100.647049° E
Coordinate basis: stated in text

Time interval: Middle Pleistocene

Max Ma: 0.16

Min Ma: 0.115

Age basis: ESR

Geography comments: "approximately 90 km east of Sawah Lunto City"
there are five ESR dates, but sample "SUM18-21a most likely provides the most reliable chronological constraint" which based on a detailed discussion "lies somewhere between ~160 ka and ~115 ka" and is therefore Middle Pleistocene

Environment
Lithology: claystone

Taphonomic context: carnivore accumulation,cave,rodent accumulation

Habitat comments: the cave was formed in "Carboniferous-Permian limestones"
"well-preserved Pleistocene fossiliferous breccia and sediments" and specifically "an unconsolidated clay-rich mud matrix"
"There are no cut marks or intentional bone breakage, marks or modification, so we cannot relate the bone assemblage to human activities or bone collecting behaviours"
"numerous small carnivores" and Hystrix are "definitive" accumulation agents

Methods
Life forms: bats,carnivores,primates,rodents,ungulates,birds,lizards

Sampling methods: quarry,screenwash,surface

Sample size: 293 specimens

Sampling comments: fossils were "removed from this breccia by hand and pick" and "sediment was sieved through a 5 mm mesh "
